CHIP CHIP HOORAY! HEINZ PROTECTS CHIPS FROM THIEVING SEAGULLS
Over half of Brits (56 per cent*) have either had their food stolen by seagulls, or know somebody who has
More than two thirds of people (67 per cent*) who have had their food nicked by gulls say they have had chips stolen, fueling the need to create an instrument to help protect the nation’s beloved dish
As the public continues to head on holidays across British seaside towns this August, Heinz’s latest creation – named HANGRI (Heinz’s Amazing No-Gull Repeller Instrument) – has been unveiled to help prevent seagulls from stealing our much-loved fish and chips
HANGRI can be trialled from Abbey Wharf restaurant in Whitby, a town notorious for its seagull thieves, from the 24th to 31st August 2021
Whitby, 26th August – Chip lovers up and down the country can rejoice as Heinz has today unveiled an instrument that can protect the nation from seagulls stealing their fish & chips. As the public continues to head on holidays across British seaside towns, it’s revealed that over half of all Brits (56 per cent*) say they, or someone they know, has had food stolen from seagulls at least once – is it too much to ask for a gull-free chippy tea?
HANGRI (Heinz’s Amazing No-Gull Repeller Instrument) will be released for a limited time in Whitby, a town that has long documented its seagull issues and gull-grabbing incidents1.
Available at Abbey Wharf restaurant, you can borrow one of 57 HANGRI creations to enjoy your chips and sauce by the waterfront without worrying about pesky seagulls diving for your dinner.
Dubbed ‘menaces’ and ‘scavengers’ in the research commissioned by Heinz*, seagulls are part and parcel of a summer holiday in Britain, alongside an iconic chip shop lunch or dinner, and with masses of Heinz sauces enjoyed at the seaside every year, Heinz’s HANGRI offers a handy solution.
Asmita Singh, Marketing Lead for Heinz Foodservice UK said: “Our research showed that there is nothing we enjoy more on a British holiday than fish and chips with a dollop of sauce by the sea. Unfortunately, it’s not just us that enjoy it – our seaside gulls are known for having a particular hankering for a chippy tea. We use umbrellas to protect ourselves from the rain, why not create a summer solution to another sky-based source of frustration – seagulls?’
“We want the nation to squeeze every last drop out of this summer and tuck in on the beach or pier without any worry of losing a chip that they have perfectly dipped to a swooping seagull!”
Whitby was chosen as the location for the trial due to its ongoing onslaught of pesky seagulls, with 44 per cent of those living in the region believing seagulls can take the joy out of eating by the sea*.
Heinz’s HANGRI creation will be available from Abbey Wharf restaurant until the end of the August bank holiday. Keeping the seagulls firmly (and humanely!) away, HANGRI will cover you from above, and will be adorned with messages to stop any winged thieves from stealing a chip.
Alison Brady from Abbey Wharf, Whitby said: “There is nothing more frustrating than a seagull bothering you when you are enjoying your food outdoors by the sea. HANGRI is a fun way to tell seagulls to step back and let our punters enjoy their chips in peace!”
57 Heinz HANGRI prototypes will be available at Abbey Wharf restaurant from 24th to 31st August.
