Flaked Out! New ice cream toppings to deal with shortage
For many this summer fish and chips followed by an ice cream will be the staple diet. With the traditional 99 in threat many of our shops also serve ice cream will be looking for a flake substitute!
Ice cream outlets are being encouraged to be creative with their toppings this summer after reports of a shortage of Cadbury 99 Flakes. It’s been claimed a sudden surge in demand for traditional ice-creams with the tasty chocolate treat have led to the shortage.
Now a leading confectionery wholesaler, Hancocks, is encouraging its customers to look for alternatives which may become just as popular in years to come.
It’s suggesting ice-cream vans, shop owners and leisure outlets look at other chocolate treats, popular flavour combinations and even consider unusual sweet toppings for something completely different.
Chris Smith, Marketing Communications Manager at Hancocks, said: “Ice-cream has come a long way over recent years and customers are always keen to try new flavours, different cones and interesting toppings.
“For retailers this can be challenging. It’s always difficult to predict just what customers will want to try but there are certain trends that really stand out this year and with a shortage of the traditional favourite, it’s the ideal time to try something new.
“Biscoff is a massive flavour that everyone is loving and talking about. Another is the chocolate orange flavour combination which is delicious and would work so well with ice-cream. There are slightly more traditional chocolate toppings too like mini marshmallows, and our favourite chocolate minis. A few unusual choices could also work like a popping candy topping – that could be a popular choice with young ice-cream and retro candy lovers.”
