Award – winning Highland café to re-open as Scotland’s first fish & chip drive thru’

The Real Food Café in Tyndrum has announced it will re-open on 23 July as a contactless drive through restaurant, using its car park and the adjacent car park as the ‘front of house’, nearly doubling its number of covers. The popular café, known for its home baking and award-winning fish and chips will have a soft launch from 15 July where it will trial its new click and collect system which has been implemented to minimise the risk of transmission before it officially re-opens on 23 July.

Customers can also order in person at the kiosk, on a one in one out basis at the front of the café. The new contactless service will see all orders delivered to customers’ car boots; for those on foot, orders will be placed on the outside tables for collection. There will be gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available on the menu, alongside its famous fish and chips.

As the car park is the new “Front of House” for the café, staff will be sporting a new high-vis uniform as well as PPE. Plastic screens have been fitted at service points, along with non-contact bins for waste collection and a new outdoor hand washing station for customers has been installed.

The café has been given the stamp of approval by VisitScotland’s ‘Good to Go’ scheme which is a kite mark awarded to businesses who are fully compliant with the Covid-19 guidelines and is a way of giving confidence to customers that it is safe to visit.

Owners, Sarah Heward and Alan McColm have been working tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure the highest levels of compliance as well as devising a completely new way of serving customers. The new service model, as well as the strict hygiene and safety policies have been implemented not only to protect  staff and customers, but the local community too: The husband and wife duo have been campaigning to highlight the concerns of rural communities when it comes to lifting travel restrictions and welcoming visitors back.   A detailed re-opening strategy will see the café re-open in phases. Outdoor seating will re-open in phase two, and by phase three indoor seating will open with socially distancing in place.
