Whitby Fish & Chip Shops Make Pledge to Help Save Seas!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Quayside and Royal Fisheries take the pledge with the MCS!

Two popular fish and chip shops in Whitby have officially made a ‘pledge’ with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) to reduce single use plastics, as well as signing up to their Good Fish Guide.

Royal Fisheries and Quayside, which are both owned and managed by the Fusco family, have committed to the nationwide ‘Pledge to Save our Seas’, an initiative from the MCS to reduce single use plastics and ensure that fish used by take-aways and restaurants is completely sustainable.

The MCS is the UK’s leading charity for the protection of seas, shores and wildlife and their mission is to ensure the seas are healthy, pollution free and protected.  The Good Fish Guide aims to help consumers make informed, sustainable choices when it comes to eating fish. More information can be found at https://www.mcsuk.org/responsible-seafood/

Quayside and Royal Fisheries have only ever served sustainable fish on the menu and have long been advocates of eco-friendly packaging, striving to use bio-degradable and, where possible, compostable food packaging. The family have also encouraged suppliers to use recyclable boxes and provided wooden cutlery and paper bags to help reduce single-use plastics across all their outlets.

Adrian Fusco comments ‘As a family business, we feel an underlying duty to ensure that we remain completely sustainable for the longevity of our industry. Serving sustainable fish has always been part of the process for us and signing up to the MCS pledge not only confirms our credentials, but allows us to communicate them too as part of the solution. The reduction of plastics is also of critical concern to us and we will do all we can to reduce the impact of this where we can.”  The family have gone to great lengths to source environmentally friendly packaging, continually on the lookout for new products that are not only biodegradable, but compostable too. “In some instances, we have been waiting for biodegradable items to become available on the market; this was the case with the pea pots. As soon as they do, we order them and put them into our outlets. We see it as a continual process of improvement” Adrian added.

Gareth Cunningham, Fisheries and Aquaculture Manager at MCS commented: It is fantastic to see businesses such as Quayside and Royal Fisheries actively participating in both the areas of the Pledge. With many consumers choosing fish from the restaurant or take-away menu, it is imperative that we ensure the fish they purchase is sustainable. Their continued work to reduce single use plastic is highly commendable and we are happy to have them on board.

Royal Fisheries and Quayside restaurants and take-aways have been owned and managed by the Fusco family since 1968 and 1999 respectively. Both outlets are national award winning restaurants and the family operates a further two outlets under the Fish Box brand. www.whitbyfishandcihips.com
