Weather Batters Batter!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Kingfisher’s return to Japan expected to draw crowds of thousands But efforts could be hampered as typhoon ‘batters’ secret ingredient

Plympton’s Kingfisher Fish & Chip shop owners, Craig Maw and Nikki Mutton, are bracing themselves for another smash hit pop-up shop in Japan following a stint last year that saw them serve an incredible 9,000 portions in just ten days.

However, it’s touch and go whether they’ll be ready to start serving as planned on Wednesday 12 September as they have just been informed that their custom-made batter, made from a top secret recipe, which had already been flown out to a warehouse in Japan has been destroyed by the recent typhoon. The South West factory that produces the batter especially for Kingfisher has dropped everything and put on a rush job in a bid to have another batch flown over in time.

The duo will make two trips to Japan this autumn to set up shop at leading department store, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi in Tokyo. This comes a year after their hugely successful debut in Japan at the annual British Fair at Hankyu department store. Invited in their role as UK’s No 1 Fish & Chip Shop 2017, the pair drew hoards of excited shoppers and even broke the fair record by serving an astonishing 1,400 portions in just one day.

Impressed by the reaction to their award-winning fish and chips, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi is flying Craig and Nikki over to Japan for 10th-18th Sep and 30th Oct -6th Nov to exhibit at their British Week fair. Kingfisher’s custom-made batter plus their preferred MSC certified fish will also be imported specially for the fair.

Other prestigious British brands exhibiting at the fair, which is expected to attract almost 90,000 visitors, include Fortnum and Mason, Prestat, Charbonnel et Walker and Cartwright & Butler, to name a few.

Speaking ahead of their trip, Craig comments, “Before we went to Japan last year, we were told there’s a real appetite out there for traditional British food, particularly anything deemed to be “No 1” or the “best”.  But that really didn’t prepare us for the sheer number of people clambering to try our fish and chips. 9,000 portions in ten days is about double what we’d normally serve in our shop! So, this year, our frying muscles are flexed and ready for anything.We’ll be using the same fish and ingredients we use in our shop to recreate that Kingfisher taste – let’s just hope our custom-made batter makes it out there in time!

Kingfisher was named the UK’s No 1 Fish & Chip Takeaway at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2017 and is known for having the ‘most sustainable seafood menu in the world’. It holds the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) quality award, is one of just two chippies to be awarded the maximum 3 star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association and won the SRA’s Source Fish Responsibly award at the Food Made Good Awards, 2017. It also has the highest rating from Fish to Fork.
