Catering Students from Edinburgh College Granton Campus were schooled on best of Scottish fish and shellfish at a special event marking the start of Seafood Week.

With recommendations that people should be eating at least two portions of fish a week, the event encouraged students to try different types of fish by moving away from traditional haddock and cod.

Catriona Frankitti from Fish for Health delivered her ‘Come Dine with Cat’ lecture to forty catering students studying for their City and Guilds and SVQ Level 2 qualifications. Restaurant menus can become more adventurous with increased sustainability by inspiring young chefs to be ambitious in their choices of fish.

At lunchtime, Jess Sparks from Seafish and Cat Frankitti were on hand at nearby Morrisons in Granton to deliver a special seafood experience to shoppers. They were joined by pupils form nearby Craigroyston High School – Connor Coulter, Dylanas Zinkevivius, Keiran Head and Jason Bateman – to encourage shoppers to try a fishy dish for dinner.

Seafood Week celebrates the amazing fish and seafood on offer in the UK, creating the perfect platform to encourage more people to eat more fish more often. Whether it’s promoting seafood in the home, at a café, restaurant, fish and chip shop, or at an event, our campaign provides all sectors of the industry with the opportunity to get involved.

The campaign will run from October 7 to 14 and showcase a different seafood species on each of the eight days, as well as featuring a daily ‘inspiration of the day’ to promote different fish dishes.

Seafood Week was reintroduced in 2015 following a seven year hiatus and has successfully developed partnerships with major supermarkets Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, The Co-operative, Iceland and M&S, alongside famous seafood brands Young’s, Birdseye, Whitby Seafoods and the SaucyFish Co.

Chief Executive of Seafish, Marcus Coleman, said: “This event is one of a number of exciting things taking place across the UK and we’d encourage everyone to get involved to make this year’s Seafood Week even bigger and better than ever!”

Last year’s Seafood Week generated an estimated benefit of around £18million for the seafood industry and this year’s event promises to be even bigger.
