Magpie Cafe In Whitby Announce When They Hope To Reopen Restaurant…

Extensive repair work is under way after two fires hit the popular fish and chip shop in as many days.

The restaurant has been closed ever since and it could be another two months before hungry tourists can get a sit down meal there once more.  Its owners have given a provisional reopening time of late October.  That means the work will have taken around five months to complete.  They say they hope to be open by then “at the very latest”, and the work has taken longer than expected.

The centuries-old building sustained structural damage in the blaze, which started in the roof.  A post on The Magpie Cafe Facebook page said: “We have had a meeting with our contractors and can now say we hope to be back open by late October at the very latest.  “It is a little later than expected but our grand old building has needed some of its structure bringing into the 21st century so it can stand for another 300 years.  More updates as and when we have them. Thank you all for your continued patience and support.”

The Magpie’s takeaway has been valiantly serving fish and chips for most of the summer, while the restaurant restoration work has taken place.  Customers were delighted with the news that a provisional date has been set. Many people responded to the “great news”.  One person couldn’t wait to get their hands on “the best fish pie ever”, while another said: “This is fantastic news. Can’t wait to visit soon.” And it sounds like there will be a bit of a queue on the opening day, with fans vowing to be visiting as soon as the cafe opens its doors again.

Crews from as far as Middlesbrough spent six hours fighting the first fire at around 10.15pm on Sunday, April 30.  The takeaway was open again later the next day, but a second, larger blaze broke out on May 1.

The Magpie’s management thanked well-wishers for their support and promised to update eager fish and chip-lovers when a more exact opening date has been set.

Good Luck from all at Chippy Chat we wish you well for the re-opening.
