Krispies in Exmouth, Devon, won the From Field to Frier Award after frying out on top at the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

The shop scooped the award, which recognises the responsible sourcing of potatoes as part of the important field to frier journey, during a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London – an event widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish and chip industry.

To secure the top spot, Krispies had to fry at the top of their game while progressing through a rigorous, multi-stage judging process which focused on their potato knowledge, including species and seasonality, and the storage and preparation of the raw ingredients.

They were also subjected to an in-depth judging visit from an awards auditor assessing the shop’s front and back-of-house operational aspects, customer service levels and the quality of the fish and chips on offer to customers.

Commenting on their award win after receiving the distinguished trophy from awards host, Nigel Barden, voice of food and drink on BBC Radio 2, shop owner Kelly Barnes, said: “This is the first time we’ve entered the awards so we’re truly overwhelmed and very thankful to be crowned winners.

“Chips are often not given the attention they deserve, as fish is generally thought to be a more important component of fish and chips. However, we work extremely hard to ensure that our potato sourcing and chipping skills are top notch. The hard work must have paid off as not only do we now attract customers from all over Devon and Cornwall, we’ve also won an award!” Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, added: “The aim of the National Fish & Chip Awards has always been to showcase the very best fish and chip businesses and individuals in the UK while setting incredibly high standards for the rest of the fish and chip industry to aspire to. “The two basic elements of the nation’s favourite dish play a pivotal role in the overall product, and the humble chip is an essential component of that marriage. This award not only measures the quality of the chip, it also recognises businesses’ efforts to source responsibly, providing customers with traceable and sustainable products. “With fish sustainability currently high on the agenda, it’s easy to overlook the significance of potato provenance. Krispies has an abundance of expertise and knowledge that shone throughout the judging process. Achieving an award of this high standard for their commitment to learning and understanding the whole journey of their potato brand is admirable.”

Award sponsor Oliver Boutwood, Director at Isle of Ely Produce, said: “This award, which is now in its fifth year, has really captured the attention and imagination of both farmers and friers alike, and it has become a part of our intrinsic values here at Isle of Ely Produce. I’m so pleased to see that fish and chip businesses are really starting to think about the whole journey of their potato from seed all the way to their customer. “Krispies has to be commended for their commitment to responsible sourcing. Not only do they provide customers with traceable and sustainable products, but their passion to maintain high industry standards is admirable. Congratulations to the team on their well-earned success and I wish them the very best for the future.”

Now in their 29th year, The National Fish & Chip Awards are recognised as one of the most prominent and respected seafood industry events in the UK. They celebrate the Great British tradition of fish and chips, showcasing the best talent, quality and choice offered by fish and chip businesses through 14 different award categories.
