Due to the packaging we use, corrugated boxes and Bio boxes, normal bins were filling too quickly. French’s Fish Shop and Platten’s Fish and Chip Shop in conjunction with North Norfolk District Council have purchased seven Big Belly solar powered compacting bins, for the Quayside at Wells-next-the-Sea.
The bins cost over £5,000 each, but have a photo cell which when the bin is half full will trigger the compactor, this happens until the bin is completely full. The bin will then text the emptying team , the bins keep records of there functions and NNDC can monitor the rubbish situation. The Bins are compact and have a handle to open and canoe foot operated also. The bin design stops birds and pests from gaining access to the contents.
The bins were trialed last year and hope to improve the litter problems of the town. Due to Fish and Chip shops using different packaging which enhances the product and the insulation properties of the container, the space for the discarded containers were taking more space to contain. The shops by working with the council hope to keep the town litter free and also discourages birds and pests and stops the winds blowing the litter about. NNDC are also working with other Fish and Chip shops in the North Norfolk area to do similar projects in the near future.
