The news means the chip shop is the first in Moray – and only the sixth in Scotland – to be MSC certified and can now use the MSC ‘blue tick’ label on its cod, assuring customers that the fish has been caught using sustainable methods.
Run by Darren Boothroyd, wife Ruth and their three daughters, Elise, Gemma and Katie for just three years, Fochabers Fish Bar is fast accumulating accolades: voted Scotland’s No 1 Fish and Chip Takeaway in the 2017 National Fish and Chip Awards, the chippy is also a finalist in other categories including National Fish and Chip Takeaway 2017, Staff Training and Development Award and NFFF Quality Award Champion. Daughter, Elise, 17, will also be attending the awards ceremony in January as the youngest ever contender for the Young Fish Frier of the Year award. Fochabers also holds the prestigious National Federation of Fish Friers Quality Award and achieved its certification through the Federation’s collaboration with the MSC via the NFFF’s easy-to-use online application page.
The family-run chippy is situated in the Spey Bay area of Moray, famous for its salmon fishing, malt whiskey and bottle nose dolphins, bringing a large amount of tourism to the area. However, Fochabers Fish Bar is proud of their strong year-round trade with their local community and recent certification, meaning they can now serve and promote MSC cod. Their certified cod is supplied by MSC certified supplier Henry Colbeck’s and is Frozen-At-Sea.
Darren explains what the certification means to the business, “We’re thrilled to be the only chip shop in Moray to have MSC certification. We operate our business on strong old fashioned values such as honesty, quality, value for money and respect. Serving sustainable fish plays a big part in our environmental programme and compliments our conservational business ethos. We’ve always tried to source our fish responsibly so going for MSC certification seemed the obvious thing to do. It assures customers that the cod we serve is fully sustainable and means we can continue serving the food we love for years to come.”
George Clark, UK Commercial Manager at the MSC, adds, “Congratulations to Fochabers Fish Bar who are doing their bit to protect the future of the oceans by selling MSC certified fish. We hope that their success will encourage other chippies in the region to follow their lead and offer their customers a sustainable choice.”
Choosing MSC labelled seafood from fisheries, retailers, brands and restaurants guarantees sustainable, traceable methods and helps protect the life in our oceans for generations to come.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ el_class=”sticky-container “][mnky_ads id=”2782”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
