National Fish & Chip Day & D-Day Landings Beach Art Event.
As the nation prepares to honour those who took part in the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, The Q Partnership (Friars Pride, Henry Colbeck & V A Whitley) was proud to commission a special sand artwork by renowned artist Claire Eason from Soul2Sand.
By commissioning Claire our aim was to highlight the new date, the D-Day landings, the nations favourite meal and also support Chip Shops, Restaurants and Takeaways across the UK.
Due to the exceptional links between fish & chips and WWII this annual event has moved to Thursday 6th June - marking the 80th anniversary of histories largest naval, land and air operation.
Fish & chips were called the ‘Good Companions’ by Winston Churchill, whose Government didn’t ration ‘fish & potatoes’ to keep up the morale of the nation, making it vital in the war effort of both World Wars. During the D-Day landings themselves, soldiers behind enemy lines at night who needed to tell if someone was a friend or foe had a code…one would call ‘fish’ and the other would reply ‘chips’!
The team found it poignant on the beach, thinking of those on Normandy beaches 80 years ago and those who risk their lives in the fishing industry. Winston Churchill famously said ‘We shall fight on the beaches’ and we were grateful that we could commemorate this special year on the beach’.
Austen Dack Chippy Chat Editor said. "This activity perfectly encapsulated the link between the D-Day landings and fish and chips. I would like to congratulate the Q Partnership for their brilliant idea."
Join the celebrations on Thursday 6th June, enjoy some fish & chips from your local chippy, and at the same time show your appreciation for the sacrifice made by many to secure the freedom we enjoy today.
